“You won’t destroy us,” he said. “You won’t destroy our democracy. We are a small but proud nation. No one can bomb us to silence. No one can scare us from being Norway. This evening and tonight, we’ll take care of each other. That’s what we do best when attacked.”

Crossing the Heart of Africa: An Odyssey of Love and Adventure: Amazon.co.uk: Julian Smith: Books.
Smith’s strong interest in the forgotten, nineteenth-century Victorian explorer Ewart Grogan compelled him to attempt a similar journey in 2007. Both walked across Africa, covering more than 4,000 miles through eight countries, though Grogan attempted to become the first person to walk across Africa. Both men had something to prove: Grogan wanted his fiancée’s family to know that he was more than a gold digger, and Smith wanted to experience the journey before his own marriage. The interwoven stories contrast an early adventure with a modern Africa, with the remnants of Burton and Speke’s search for the source of the Nile running through it. Grogan’s adventures in Africa are carefully researched: from dodging cannibals, wild animals, and multiple illnesses to his death, when he was virtually forgotten. Smith, an award-winning journalist, tells his own story nearly a century later, as well as revealing a modern continent going through constant change. –Jay Freeman

I really am giving bloggers a bad name lately! Things are going along fine in my little neck of the woods. DH started his new position and is enjoying it. The kids are out of school for the Summer and we are busy swimming (when it’s not cold and raining..blah) and enjoying the break. I am at 82 lbs lost and counting, took up running and am thinking of joining the local gym when the kids are back in school. Healthy, Wealthy and Wise is what we are..OK, not so wealthy, but we are living! *lol*
Yesterday was my 13th wedding anniversary, earlier in the month DH had got me an ebook reader and last night we went out for a nice dinner, hard to believe we are already into July! This year seems to be just flying by. Well that is about it, short and sweet as they say…until next time..TATA!
